![]() ![]() It's disappointing that we seemingly won’t hear about the project for a good while, but it’s nice to have some confirmation as to what Extremely Ok Games has up its sleeve, if nothing else. TowerFall and Celeste rank among my favorite games of the last generation, so I’m excited to see what Earthblade entails. The truth is that we don't know how long it will take, just that it will take as long as it takes (and that it will take a long time).” The press release lists the release window as “20XX,” and Thorson admits that it’ll be a while before we get any more information about the project following this reveal, saying in the post, “Now it sounds optimistic to say out loud that Earthblade could be released within 5 short years of Celeste. We have plenty of time to speculate because, unfortunately, it doesn’t appear that Earthblade will be coming anytime soon. Thorson states that Earthblade was conceived after developing four prototypes and that it serves as a philosophical middle-ground between doing something totally new and something familiar. The poster shows a figure holding a weapon (perhaps the titular Earthblade?) overlooking a cliff with a cottage below and towers in the background. To that end, the team has released the game’s official logo, a concept art poster hinting towards a presumably fantasy setting, and even a musical sample by Celeste composer Lena Raine, which you can listen to on Soundcloud here. But I can see the general shape of it, and I feel really good about where it's going." Not perfectly, mind you - most of the details are still pretty blurry in my mental image, and I'm sure a lot will change along the way. Thorson explains in the blog post, "I can see the whole thing in my head. What is Earthblade? The studio describes it as a “2D explor-action” game with a pixel-art aesthetic, but don’t expect to play it anytime soon.Ī blog post by Extremely OK Games founder Maddy Thorson describes the announcement as more of a “vibe reveal” to give players a stylistic sense of the game as opposed to detailing story and gameplay, elements that seem to still be taking shape. All we know is it's a "2D explor-action game in a seamless pixel art world".Extremely OK Games, the team behind TowerFall and Celeste has announced its next game, Earthblade. ![]() There's still no release date, but last year saw a "vibe reveal" showing teaser artwork and music. But for me it's ultimately about who I was - it can't contain everything that I will ever be," she says. "Celeste taught me so much about myself and will always be a part of me. While she reflects on the importance of Celeste, it's time for Thorson to look ahead to the future. I need to have faith that the essential core that constitutes 'me' is indestructible." I need to allow my identity to disintegrate. I need to let go of who I was and the roles that I tried so desperately to fill. "And this gender transition, more than anything else, is begging me to let go. "I do not want to make Celeste again and I do not want to be who I was when we made Celeste, again. I'm not ready to be a symbol in the way that social media demands - I'm still just a girl who's trying to figure her shit out. "It doesn't feel like I have room to be the messy, growing human I am in this kind of position. "Who I am is changing, or wants to change, and this public persona has become an obstacle to that change," she says. It's for this reason she plans to step away from social media. With this, though, comes a sense of "heavy responsibility" for Thorson. I am thrilled that my work and my personal story have helped people, and I think that it's important for real live trans people to be visible." "I think there's value in the confirmation that yes, Celeste is a trans story in addition to its broader relatability. Once I started trying to do just that, I found it impossible without talking about my own now-apparent transness. "It felt like people needed to know whether Madeline was trans, and I felt a responsibility to engage with that conversation. "If the discourse around Celeste hadn't become so focused on its queer undertones, I don't think I would have come out publicly for a long time," she says. In this new blog post, Thorson thanks fans for the game's reception and explains further how the game is intertwined with her trans identity. ![]()
